She is around 5 months old. I noticed on Monday that there was something sticking out of her vent. It was egg shaped but didn't look like an egg. (Pic attached) she seemed fine but I looked it up and thought she was egg bound. I gave her a 30 min epsom salt bath. I checked again and it was gone. She hasn't laid an egg yet. I read that it could've been her cloaca and not to worry. What are your thoughts? Is she going to lay soon? Thank you.

Hi @Laurie Wright :frow Welcome To BYC

It looks like your pullet had a prolapsed vent. This is where part of the oviduct is sticking out of the vent.

Soaking her most likely helped reduce the inflammation so she could re-tract it. Make sure she is staying hydrated, make oyster shell available free choice and just keep watch on her. If she has just started laying, this may be a one time thing, but some chickens can be prone to it happening again.

Thank you, for your feedback. I've checked her everyday since it happened on Monday 8/7/17, so far so good. We did have a heat wave last week. It got to about 110 here- I wonder if that played a part. I did purchase some oyster shells to give them. I also read that apple cider vinegar is good to put in their water. Thank you again!
