All through winter, my 8 egg layers laid 6-8 eggs a day total. These past few days we've gotten 4, 4, and 5 eggs. I'm in wisconsin, so its not like its really hot or anything. Does anybody know why my less than one year old layers slowed down when they would usually be producing like crazy?

Let me just start by saying it is pretty normal

I have 18 hens and they were laying up to 16 per day and then they dropped drastically but............it was winter...any change in temperature, temperament physical condition can cause changes. They may be ready to molt especially at their age. Have they molted yet? Do you see any signs of sickness? How is their poo? so many things factor in their drop off. I would check their health and if all is normal just relax. Oh, be sure they are getting the right food and oyster shell.

Check for mites, lice, and other yuckies...

But it may be the change in light. My hens all take a day off whenever it rains. It never rains here, so it wigs them out, big time.

So if you have had cloudy days, or even the light changing as you move into spring, that could be your culprit.

My girls are taking a break too....and lighter colored brown eggs when they do give me something. One went broody and has a clutch of 6 chicks....maybe the girls are jealous!?

We're having the same issue. We are in NE IN and have 22 RIR's, all winter long we got 18-20 eggs a day, then about a week ago it started dropping and last night we got 13, day before 12, 11, 12 10. We just did the time change "Spring Forward" and I was wondering if that had something to do with it

11 of mine hens are laying at the moment, and I have been getting 11 eggs everyday. A few days ago I was out most of the day, so they didn't get any free ranging that day, and I only got 8 eggs.

The following day when they had their usual 8/10 hours free ranging, I was back to 11 and 11 every day since.

It's almost like they are telling me, don't let us out and we won't give you eggs.

Seriously, as other posters have said, I think any change of circumstances can affect the number of eggs.

I have the same problem, in Jan and Feb I was getting 4 and 5 eggs a day from my 6 hens, for the past 3 weeks I've been getting 2 to 3 a day, I get 4 eggs no more than twice a week! Does springtime or the days length have anything to do with the slowdown?
