This is a Bantam frizzled Cochin about 10 weeks old. This was not a frizzled to frizzled breeding. The hen was smooth. I've had two unrelated chicks, different breeds do this (a year apart). No evidence of mites, lice or pecking/plucking. The chick is about the same age the other was when it happened to that one. The chicks skin is silky smooth. The feathers are just gone, not broken off.

1. Are you saying the chick had feathers and they just fell out?

2. Do you know the parentage of each that this happened to?

3. Were the parents of either used in the cross frizzled? One parent never had a frizzled grandparent?

4. Do you have pics of the parents?

5. Were all the birds involved purebreds or were they mutts?

My guess would be genetics or a blood disease. The blood disease guess due to the blue eye thing.

Yes, we need to know, where the afflicted chicks normal feathered when they were younger? Did this come along suddenly? I noticed the blue eye thing also, that just doesn't seem right. I know BYCers have mentioned a free service where you can talk to a vet on line I think and get advice. Maybe someone will speak up and provide the link. Makes me think of alopecia in people (hair).

1- if mommy and daddy are both grizzled it could be a genetic thing I have seen them completely naked
2- frizzles are slow to feather out give him some time

No cedar chips. Its on natural dirt ground. It does have wood chips stuck to it, but those came from a crate I put them in while coops cleaning. I don't have the parents anymore. The hen was smooth but he was a hatchery bird, so I don't know was in the background. This happened very gradually. She was completely bald on her body at one point. The longer wing feathers didn't fall out. Same thing with the other chick this happened to last year (it was a hatchery "mystery chick" and we never figured out what I was, I had my money on Mini Turkey Vulcher). It happened the same with that chick too. With that one all the feathers eventually grew back.

He could be molting maybe

I know sometimes a chick can go for a while not having alot of feathers because they are molting. I actually have one doing that at this moment also but he isn't missing as many feathers. I wish the best of luck and hope it's nothing serious -Emily
