What's wrong with this duckling?

Bless you for giving the little one a chance.

It's something, I think, that we can be so encouraged by a little b.m.

I know. Who would have thought I would ever get so happy about a duckling poopy;)

Ok. I'm trying to narrow down what is going on. He is now at the point that if I hold his body like he's standing by his food and water without holding the bowls up to his beak he will eat and drink on his own, holding his own head. When he is laying down he flops it over usually. I have seen him sitting on his legs with his head up. It seems like he can sit up for a time on the lower part of his legs but as soon as he pushes to stand that's where he can't hold himself and he goes flopping around. He's also very exhausted...sleeping or laying in his floppy sleep position a lot. I was thinking of giving him also the save a chicken vitamin electrolyte pack. Is that ok to give to him?

Save a chick sounds like a good idea. I have not used it myself, but have seen others. You may want to do a search on that just to be sure first.

From what I searched it's ok to give it to them. I called the local feed store and they were going to bring it up from their other store yesterday for me. Went to pick it up and it was just the probiotics...not the vitamin pack:( so I ended up getting it anyway and put some electrolytes and probiotics in his water just to help with stress and gut health. I also ended up giving him a little olive oil since he hadn't gone potty since the morning. He had some pottys overnight and this morning doesn't have floppy head. Still cant stand but I'm hoping that as he gets more niacin in him that wil help. It's amazing to me if they are lacking that one vitamin (niacin) how drastically it affects them. Since it's so important for them to have that is there a feed that comes with it? I'm slightly irked since before he hatched I spent so much time at the feed store talking to them about feed for him and my other Pekins...and these people raise ducks too.

He's gotten a lot stronger over the last few days and each day can do something else. Yesterday he was to the point of holding up his own head the entire time and when I put him by his food and water, I could put a rolled up towel under his bum and he could hold himself up to eat and drink. The problem is this...It seems as though he has much more energy than the last few days, so as soon as I put him down he tries to stand and flips over and gets stuck on his back. It's stressing him out since he is starting to breath with his mouth open. The only time he doesn't breath with his mouth open is when I put him in the water.

Also, when he has to go potty or tries to stand, he pushes his legs out in front of him, and either scoots backwards or flips. This morning when I put him in the water it's like he had a crook in his neck (I'm thinking maybe because he was stuck for a couple hours last night?) and floated on his side. He can straighen out for a second and then back to the same side or other. He did seem to loosen up a bit after being in the water.

Is there some way to to contain him to stop flipping, I don't want him to injure himself.

Thanks

Hi i have a rouen duck who was at least 7 months old and he got the same thing. the vets said that he would never walk again and i became really depressed. then i found an article on niacin and i went to the shops, bought some, crushed it , put it in a syringe with a little water and put it down his gullet. the nextmorning he was standing after almost 3 months of not walking at all. after a week of treatment he was fine and walking again. i have a few videos of him now on my youtube channel some of which contains him on a bus and train. check it out and you can see how he walks and stands fine.

I have been giving the niacin for 3ish days and have seen an improvement:) I was worried about him hurting himself since his energy is up and he basically is bouncing off the walls trying to stand and flipping over, getting stuck that way...It's just so painful to watch. I didn't know if there was a way for me to stop or at least try to contain him from hurting himself? Or are they pretty hardy
