Hello, I could really use some help! This is the second time getting chicks to raise for my flock and I've never had something like this happen. 1 of the little chicks I have seems to have a limp leg so to speak. She was fine when I brought her home and fine for like the first day or two, then I noticed she was laying down a lot, thought maybe it was sick but then I noticed when I would move it that it walked with a limp and wouldn't wanna put any pressure on its one leg. After doing some searching it would almost look like a splayed leg, but usually that happens to both legs. The tendon isn't swollen or anything like that and the leg does have life Because the little guy uses it to scratch itself. Friend of mine told me to separate it from the others and give it poly vi sol without iron because it could be not getting enough vitamins so I did. Well then it wouldn't get up or move at all, had it in there for about 3 days and they took it out, when its with the other birds it moves better and will eat and drink without me having to pick it up and move it by the food and water, I've been giving it the poly vi sol for about 4 days now and it still won't use the leg. Anyone have something like this happen to them before and if so have they found a solution? Everything I find doesn't say a way it could be fixed, I will upload a picture if my phone will let me, if anyone can help me that would be awesome!!! Hate see the little guy limping around and not being able to run and play with the other birds!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sorry about your chick and its poorly leg :hugs I have not had this happen personaly so I can only say what I think. If it is vitamin deficiency you have covered with the polyvisol. As you said this developed after you brought them home do you think other chicks could have pulled this leg? I had this happen only at the weekend with some newly hatched, 2 chicks had got the runty one on its back dragging it by a toe each luckily I was there to stop them dragging it any further. Have you checked under the foot to make sure there is nothing stuck in its pads? It may be something as simple as that. It could have strained the leg? There are so many possible causes and with no obvious sign of injury can be hard to determine the cause. There is the emergencies injuries and cures section you can post in too for more thoughts on this https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Wishing you the very best of luck and hope the chick is well soon :frow

i believe that your chick has splayed leg, a condition that might be resolved by creating a leg cast so that the leg is in the proper position. Slayed leg has a high mortality rate and the sooner it is treated the better. splayed leg can occur by over crowding, or if a chick is really weak.
Here is a link on how to treat it:

Welcome to BYC. You may want to put "Splayed legs" in the searchbox - it should pop up with advice. I believe folks fashion little shoes out of bandaids, to straighten the foot and bind to the other. I do believe it is curable, when treated this way, early. Its such a pretty chick, it's well worth trying. Good luck.
