I've owned Pekins, White Cresteds, runners, Khaki Campbells, Mallards and Rouens in the past, and currently I have just one rescued Buff drake. I'm trying to buy a Welsh Harlequin drake friend for him off Craigslist, and the whole effort has gotten me thinking about raising ducklings again. They would be pets, but I like the idea of promoting heritage or endangered species and maybe breeding them on a small scale eventually. What do you all think?

.like to make little holes in ground

My favorite breed is the Dutch Hookbill - it's the oldest breed of domestic duck still in existence (you can't get any more "heritage" than that), they're super-friendly, small (around 4 pounds average), they're great seasonal layers of pale blue eggs (which they will sit on if you let them accumulate a clutch), and they're very unique-looking.

Plus, they're still pretty rare, and they deserve greater world numbers.

I don't know anything about call ducks, Mandarins OR hookbills, so these are fascinating responses and I'll have to research those breeds. Duckgirl, I do love those mallards and Rouens!

Thanks y'all!

I think my favs are my Indian Runners and Pekins...I like loud, brassy, nosey, follow me around and fuss at me ducks! There is one spot where I give the pea treats and if they see me with a bag of peas the all gather around and "herd" me to the spot just quacking away...they crack me up...
