I really like your automatic feeder. I'll show it to dh and maybe we could come up with a smaller version. We have limited wall space to cut through due to having our coop in the garage. Zero waste is something I'm looking for.

One more thing... to make sure nothing can fall into it, I have a small roof built over the tray and it's mounted so the tray is about the height of my chickens backs. If you have some that are smaller than the rest you can put a brick or something under part of it for them to stand on.
You can adjust it so you can control how fast the feed comes out at the bottom and it holds a 50# bag of feed at a time. I really like it and there is no waste.

Oddly enough, I think they are eating more. They went through 30# in ten days. I have 6 RIRs, 6 araucanas and two EEs. they also get about 2 or3 pounds of salad every day, lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, etc. which they won't be getting for the next three weeks till I get back home.

Mine are eating like crazy too! I only have 8 and lately we've been buying feed every 3 weeks. My dh is going to install a door on the run, so my girls can have supervised free range. Our yard is loaded with bugs and grasshoppers. Hopefully this will help.
I love the new feeder that dh built, KDK1's design is awesome! It's working out great even though we don't the tray lid on. They have not spilled any food out, even with the extra boards I set down for my bantam to stand on to eat. She can't reach the food from the ground yet.
I have a hanging metal one...no waste at all...I have a little silkie , and put a block of wood for her till she could reach, now it's all set for all of them.
