Whats your opinion on this?

Yes, they are government property. You can get a fine for leaving anything other than US mail in your box. I had a customer stick a delinquint payment in my mailbox once without mailing and I got royally chewed out and threatened by my mail man.

edited because in my fuzzy brained, cannot breathe, lack of oxygen state cannot spell worth a crap

Can we say, disgruntled UPS guy??? That was a very passive aggressive act, and I'd be fuming if it was my mail box... My DH says talk about going postal

I'd get them to replace it... I mean we all have bad days, but I typically don't deface property when I do! Our mailbox is the same size as yours, so those #'s are pretty big.

From doing a quick search, I have found nothing to say that the mail box is the property of the government. Just that the govt has the exclusive right to use it. I may be wrong but I could't find anything to say that a curbside/roadside mail box was property of the govt. It has to meet certian regs for the postmaster to allow mail to be delivered. I did find a law the states that states the the number has to be on the mailbox OR on your house. So if the number is on your house, i think you're covered. I did find where the mail boxes for a group of homes/apts that are free standing boxes are the property of the govt. I will keep looking for something more offical.

Make them replace it. I would also be upset if this happened to me. I agree that they should have just given you a note or suggested that you put the numbers on the box. Instead, they basically defaced your personal property. UPS has nothing to do with the mailbox in the first place.

I am perfectly happy to be proven wrong, I do not think it is right that we have to buy mailboxes but then they belong to the government. I do not think that they should fine you for using them for other than mail, cannot think of a very good reason for that unless someone was filling the box and not leaving room for mail

I do know that my mail man told me that I could be fined because my customer left an envelope with no postage in the box. I would also be happy to find out that old crabby pants was just being hateful, or was just plain wrong himself.

I do think that you have a right to be mad about the numbers being put on your mail box, but it may be a good thing that they're there

Obviously, the ugly form that they are in is not your first choice, but ambulances and other emergency vehicles often have a difficult time finding a property and every bit of extra identification helps! Even though your house is clearly marked, it never helps to have your number somewhere else.

The last house we lived in had our number 3 different places, in large clear numbers and people still had a hard time finding it!! You have to cater to everyone, even the ones who need a little extra help, like government employees

(This, of course, does not refer to any of the highly intelligent government employees who frequent BYC)

See thats what I thought too. I have UPS out to my house at least 3 times a month sometimes more. I have never had any problems with them. They have never mentioned that its hard to read the numbers or anything like that. If so then I would have done something about it. Hubby said the guy seemed nice, but never said anything about maybe getting easier to see numbers or anything. And then to top it off when the guy called from the local office he seemed kinda..like he had an oh well attitude.

Heres how the the call went..

"UPS guy: So I received an email from the USP headquaters that you have a complaint?

Me: Yes, then I tell him the numbers are uncalled for, etc.

UPS: So..umm..well I guess you not happy about the numbers then?

Me: No, I think it was uncalled for to put 6 inch tall numbers on the side of my mailbox. The surrounding mailboxes have even less than what I have. Some dont even have numbers at all.

UPS: Well since you filed a complaint then this..umm..issue of yours is going to be seen by the dist. manager.

Then he puts me on hold for 10 minutes and gets back on the phone and proceeds to tell me

UPS: Ma'am I found out which driver it was and umm..well yeah(then this is where he sorta clears his throat, but it sounds more like hes trying not to laugh) this is going to the head boss since you filed a formal complaint and he will have to look at this and then see what needs to be done about..this..umm issue of yours."

Can you say

For one he never asked to write all over my mailbox. He didnt say anything about not being able to read the numbers anywhere. He took it upon himself to do this. The whole fire dept. and two EMS workers went to every house in town (town pop. of 400 or so) and give tips and pointers about marking your house and other odds and ends. That was the reason we painted the numbers on our house black and moved them to a better location. So they would be easier to find. They also told us that painting them with the glow-in-the-dark paint every 4 months or so would also help. As they can see them better in the dark. (This doesnt work for us b/c we have a st. light in our drive way.) Another helpful tip they gave us was when you dial 911 and its dark out and they need to find you house, its very helpful if you will flash your porch lights on and off. That gives them a signal to which house they need to be at. Sorry got a little side tracked.

My main point was I was curious curious if I was overreacting or not. I know that I sometimes 'fly off the handles' a little too fast, so I wanted to see what other people thought about this. Thanks everyone.
