What's your wooly caterpillar forecast?

I have been seeing a lot of those this year, well every year. And they are always banded types, and they bite!
One of them had gotten in my boot this morning, and I did not know until I had felt an inch on my foot while I was milking cows at 5 am at a farm where I work. I had thought that it was just a sliver in my sock scratching my foot, and felt something sliding between my toes, again I thought it was just a stick or something that had fallen in my boot through the hole in my sock. Finally that inch was bugging me very bad that I threw the boot off, and scratch that inch, and felt something under my toes, something soft and fuzzing. My first thought was some lint, but when I reached to get it out, I felt slime, and pulled out a flatted banded wooly bear with its guts oozing out.

Grabbed a udder rag and cleaned my toes as fast as I could.

Speckly, I'm seeing folks in your area talking about the persimmons forecasting a similar winter. Get you woodpile stocked and runs covered with plastic. We go around town and take all the bagged leaves for wind barriers and with every snow, dump a bag on top so they can walk around on it and scratch for goodies. This also makes for a significantly better Spring run because the layers of leaves and poo break down nicely instead of it being a thawed, frozen poop soggy bog.

I'm getting well prepared here. Don't want to have to struggle to keep up like last winter. I'll have it all ready if I just get another 30 or so bags of leaves...and after this cold snap, I should be able to do that Saturday when it's 60 out and everyone rakes what dropped off the trees yesterday.

Is there a legend for predictions based on tree colors? Gotta find that superstition...

Ever heard of the "Black Squirel Winter?"

No, do share!

Here's one story and in truth Mullis told me certain weather ppl came to talk to him and look at his records for many years back.

According to him they got very quiet after reading his records. His records were over 90% accurate where as theirs were not close! As we would say "it got their gizzards!"

I agree with Illia LOL!

We have not seen any around here lately. Must have hitched a ride south! They came in all sorts of bands and non bands/solid colors so I can not rely on their weather forecast.
