Wheb do I need to open Hotel Nest Box?

My flock is around 18 weeks old. I have a ladder that goes up into the nesting box, but have the box blocked off at this time. Do I need to prepare the nesting box with straw and shavings? If so, how much and , when should I open the hotel for business? Will my pullets begin showing some type of desire/different behavior to begin nesting/laying? Should I put dummy eggs in there to help?

Hello! I would open it now, since your hens are 18 weeks, and you can put wood shavings or hay in there, or even straw, which is softer if you like.

I still have roosters in the coop...will hey go in there as well? If so, how can I keep them out? I only have a coop without a run for now, and am looking for homes for the young roos...
