I am new at chicken-keeping and my babies arrive on the 20th. I'm so excited! Of course they will be day olds but I'm wondering when I will need to start clipping wings. They will be able to free range in my backyard during the daytime when they are old enough but I'd hate to have them fly into the neighbors yard and annoy them.

I will also need to know how the technique is done...

Thanks so much!

i dont clip wings, but my cousin does and he starts when they turn 6 weeks old and clips them about every month from then on.

and all you need to do is clip the main flight feathers.

Clip after every molt - only the flight feathers.

You spread out the wing & the flight feathers are the really long ones at the end. They will not grow back. They have to go through a molt.

I just use a standard pair of scissors - they don't like it much - but it doesn't hurt. Like cutting finger nails or hair.
