when and where do you report chicken loss?

Probably 25 + years ago, a pack of feral dogs killed most of my chickens early one Saturday morning. With the help of a few neighbors we addressed the situation. I then contacted the county Dog Warden, who came out took photos and notes, and took the dog bodies. I did in fact get a check from the County(this was in Ohio) they allowed maybe $2.00 per bird. However, I think you are on the right track with your thinking of not getting the law involved in this case. Too many grey areas, with your neighbor doing the shooting, dogs already buried, you not actually witnessing any of it. Probably best to leave buried dogs lie.
