When buying straight run???

Okay I got my chick order on June 12.They were hatched on the 10th.
I was very specific and therefore only got about 75% of what I wanted.

I ordered and got 4 frizzle pullets
4 barred rock pullets
4 silver laced wynadotte pullets (only got one)
6 straight run silkie
one of which died.

So I have 1 buff silkie, one GORGEOUS white silkie 2 black silkies and one grey.

So as a general rule what are my chances of having ALL silkie roos?I am just wondering because as I read the posts (my second year with chickens),it seams if you ASK for straight run they give you a high % of roos.

All my ohters were said to be pullets (what I asked for) and the feed store had added my order in with a LARGE order of lots of other stuff including what I wanted. But the silkie they just pulled for me from their straight run and I would have had 2 whites but again one died.

So tell me statistically do you think I got ANY silkie pullets?

And as a side note are they EVER wrong on sexing the pullets?SO i may have say a frizzle roo but not know it yet?

I read someone say they would NEVER buy straight run and judging from posts it does seem to mean get a roo.

"So tell me statistically do you think I got ANY silkie pullets?"

REPLY: With 5 straight run chicks, assuming that the mix is 50/50, the chances you would get ALL roos (or all hens) is 1 in 32. (This is if I am remembering Statistics 101 properly, and I think I am. Same concept as the chances of flipping heads (or tails) 5 times in a row with a coin toss.)

"And as a side note are they EVER wrong on sexing the pullets?SO i may have say a frizzle roo but not know it yet?"

REPLY: All hatcheries I know of only guarantee 90% accuracy on sexing (at best), so yes, you may have a roo.

"I read someone say they would NEVER buy straight run and judging from posts it does seem to mean get a roo."

REPLY: This may be the case, but I think it is also likely that when you order straight run they pick from a bin of chicks that have not been sexed, and you really are getting straight run. I may be wrong about this, and they have all chicks sexed and then make up the straight run orders by picking half and half (or a little more generous with the roos....)

Others, I'm sure, will have good answers, just some thoughts.

(Edited to correct typo)

I ordered 6 straight run banty chicks. I got 6 roos. I understand they can't sex bantys. Boo Hiss. However, I did get a fellow OKIE to swap me 4 roos for 4 hens, I think he was taking pity on me. I now have 2 banty roos and 4 hens. I hope to have some little baby chicks some day.

Sitka thanks for your informative reply. It gives me hope!

How do they sex them in the hatchery? Is it from feathers? Stupid me thought it was from a drop of blood from each chick but that DOES seem labor intensive.

I asked about the possibility of them being wrong because I have 2 frizzle chicks that are consistantly butting chests and flying at each other in the outside brooder. So it did cross my mind. That would be bad cuz I am going to put my frizzle pullets with a silkie roo.

Having all silkie roos would NOT be the end of the world because I got grey, black, buff and white. So I would just have to choose which black is of better quality.Point being at least i got a choice of colors.

We were wanting to breed silkie/frizzles here.Dh is already on board for making seperate breeding pens.

Donnabelle well know I have learned something knew.I thought they could sex ANYTHING.But that DOESN'T make me feel great on the possibility of all roos.

I wasn't worried at all until I read ALL the posts on straight run ending up with roos.

But NONE of my silkies are fighting, and again i do have a pair of frizzles that are bumping chests.

I ordered 10 straight run Silver Penciled Wyandottes and got 8 pullets and 2 cockerals. Yay! I ordered all pullets in the other feather pattern colors and got ALL pullets - Yay again.

I agree 1/32 is correct if you have 5 straight run.

I ordered 10 pullets and got 9 pullets and 1 roo...so the 90% accuracy is exactly what I got. The other 3 chicks I got were not from a hatchery, and were not sexed at all...I got 1 pullet and 2 roos.

I believe that straight run Silkies are truly straight run with 50/50 odds, so you should get 2 and 3, or 3 and 2...but then there's Murphy's Law...Good Luck!

Oh, and I forgot to add not to worry about the chest bumping. It could mean roos, but not necessarily. I had chest bumping pullets...especially my Leghorns which turned out to be all pullets, just like I ordered. They also turned out to be very tame and friendly adults.
