When buying straight run???

Hi all! Just a quick idea to throw everyone off and make you rethink the "straight run" concept. If the hatcheries are taking orders for pullets only, those orders are being filled FIRST out of the mix of hatched chicks which would mean that the remainder of the draw chicks for a straight run has a higher ratio of roos to pullets. I would guess most people are placing orders for pullets the majority of the time, wouldn't you? That would mean that if the hatching eggs had a probability of being 50/50, then all the orders for pullets are pulled out of the mix, your "straight run" order isn't really a 50/50 shot.

I just did a straight run order from a hatchery and ended up with 8 out of 10 roos. Boo!

Anyway, best of luck to you and yours!

Ahhh ... I take back that long-winded explanation then.

bkreugar,
A few breeds can be sexed by feather length, a few (sex-links) by color, but most are vent-sexed: a trained expert looks at their vent and can tell if male or female.

Here is a video of it being done at Murray McMurray hatchery:

(I posted this on another thread last week; sorry to repeat, but thought it would be appropriate here.)
