I have 3 Frizzle Bantam Cochin chicks that are almost 5 weeks old now. Is it safe for them to go to an outside pen during the day and an outside brooder at night now? They are still in my house right now and maybe I'm just being too protective over them but these are my first bantams. They are pretty feathered now but since they are frizzles, I worry they will get too cold at night even with a heat lamp. Or worse, what if they get too hot at night. The temp is not steady outside like it is in my house. I'm being rediculous, huh?

Any help or assurance that they will be ok outside?

ETA: A couple of pics... I can't believe how much they have grown in the last couple of weeks.

Yes - they can go out in a predator secure coop as the weather should not be a problem with feathered out birds. You may want to 'snake proof' the inside of the coop for a while at night at least for a peace of mind until they are bigger in size. They are very cute!

What a couple of CUTIES!

My 5 week old silkies and bantam cochin are in an outside brooder in the tool shed. It's a big towelling box with the heat lamp. Probably about 80 F during the day and 75 F at night in there. It gets cold here at night!

I started taking them outside for about an hour each day when it was nice out when they were 1 week old. Of course I kept a very close eye on them and would not leave their side in case a hawk got brave. They *LOVED* it outside.

Now I've been putting my chicks out in the run everyday (when it's nice out) for the whole day until dusk. They love it but I just don't think mine are feathered out all the way yet so I keep them with a heat lamp in a box. Maybe in a week at most they'll be out in the coop.

I KNOW! I was thinking the SAME exact thing. I was comparing pictures 4 weeks to 5 weeks and I was like wow did they grow.

My babies are growing up!
