Hello There.

I'm incubating some brown eggs, and am on day six today (7/24/12). I BELIEVE they would be described as "Buff Orpington" shade eggs. They are from Whole Foods, so think of them as Barred Rock, RIR eggs. Most of them look like Golden Buff (Which is Red Star, golden sex link, Cinnamon Queen, or Golden Comet. They have a lot of different names.) eggs, because of the size and shade. Anyway, here's a picture of the eggs.

I apologize for the mess everywhere. You can see they're about the shade of a penny, maybe a tad lighter. Anyway, what day should I be able to tell if they are living or not? Here's what I candle with.

I'm not sure on any wattage or anything of the sort... I just know it's bright...

They are not dark eggs compared to say, marans and barnevelder eggs! You should have no problem at all seeing development after a couple of days - especially 6. Many say to leave them 7 days before candling... but usually I have a peek at day 3 or 4 and at this stage I can see development starting!

Your torch (flashlight or whatever you guys call them!) looks perfect for candling. Give it a shot I say!

You should probably be seeing something by now, some veins developing at the very least.

As you are hatching eggs from Whole Foods that 'claim' to be fertile.. have you checked that they actually are? I would buy another carton and crack a few open to see if they have the distinct 'bulls eye' that indicates fertility. If not, you can almost put your money on the fact yours are not fertile either. Remember - a sellers claims are not ALWAYS true.

I just think that as they are from a free range egg farm, there is every chance they are not actually fertile at all! Even if the farm does have roosters roaming about with the hens.

I still have my fingers crossed for you!

Yep, cracked 6 open 5/6 fertile. One of the eggs developed clearly, like the others should have but the embryo died. I figured I should give some more time :(
