When chicken dies of unknown causes

I just know there will be at least one time in my life that I'm sure a chicken died of old age. would you then? Great point about the fertilizer!!!

If I don't see it die by an ax, I'm not eating it or feeding it. At least not to my other animals. Maybe to the tomato garden. Or a rosebush. Or a tree.

If you knew that it was old and healthy, maybe? I still don't think i would if i found it dead, but at least for us we would probably full it before then and feed it to the dogs

Folly's place: "I always necropsy chickens who die of unknown causes, and then bury the remains."

I just got necropsy results from a chicken that died mysteriously. It wasn't anything I would want to feed or have near my pets or person. Better to bury and wash your clothes and sterilize the soles of your shoes than risk your flock or other pets.

I had the state animal lab do mine. They charge but they are thorough and find a lot I would not see if I did it myself. I felt it worth the investment for my flock, and as it turned out, it was.
