When chickens begin to lay

I have been raising chickens for a few years (not sure how long) lol I saw a question on how do you get new chicks to lay in nest boxes. I had about 30 Rhode Island Reds and Black Australorps that free ranged and would hide eggs. I lost those chickens from old age and predators and hatched one egg that was mixed it has always laid in a box and now I have a mix of 10 other hens that are beginning to lay in the same box I have some Ameracaunas that just started laying green eggs. It seems the old hen is teaching them. I have tried fake eggs but they usually roll them out the box

You say the old hen is teaching them. That's the best way. New layers can take a bit to get it all sorted out, but given a little time, and they do. Make sure you have enough nest boxes.

Welcome to BYC. A larger lip on the nest box keeps them from kicking out the nesting material and nest eggs.
