I have a broody in a large dog crate. She is on eggs that should hatch this weekend. Her nest is a big pile of grass straw on top of some nest box liners. But I'm not sure that's great for chicks. It's deep hay and I'm worried they will get stuck. Is it a good idea to remove the hay after the chicks hatch? I intend to keep them in the crate with mama for the first two weeks.

Its possible that momma will re-arrange the bedding to suit her and her chicks - you'd be amazed at how athletic they are! But if its a concern, you should do what you feel is best - there are very few hard and fast rules when it comes to keeping chickens

X2, just make sure that the chicks can get back into the nest when they come out. For the first two days most of them will stay under the hen, then they will venture out with the hen.
