When do chickens lay eggs?

For those of you who free range... do you hold off on letting the chickens out of the coop so that they lay their eggs in their box? My chickens should start laying in the next month or so... at least one of them... but I'm not sure where she would lay it if she's free ranging all day??

Put some golf balls/fake eggs/hard boiled eggs in the nesting box where you want her to lay. It will hopefully give her the idea of where she should be laying.
