When do chickens start to lay eggs?

My granddaughter talked me into getting chickens over summer. Now she doesn't want anything to do with them. I have been raising them. They have gotten very big. Just curious to when they start to lay eggs

Depending upon the breed and time of year, anywhere from 20 weeks of age to as much as 9 or 10 months of age.
