Hi all
Only acquired my 3 silkies at the beginning of October but by the end of November, 2 were broody. I believe them to be about 2 years old. I don't have a cockerel and do not want chicks so I had to break them. It's winter here so I was a bit shocked.
I tried at first just throwing them out of the coop (not literally ha ha), but they just kept waddling back in. So I put them in a rabbit run during the day and it took about 3 weeks! I had researched that hens can starve themselves if not moved and as I knew they would never hatch their eggs I needed to make sure they would eat and drink. I gave them cider vinegar in water to help with the stress.
Still every now and again, I will find one of them sitting on one of the Maran's or white leghorns eggs
I think they enjoy snuggling up to the eggs. My other 3 ladies are ex batts so have no interest in brooding but the silkies are crazy wannabe mamas.
