When do they start laying?

I had the same plastic easter eggs in mine. If they are being moved around that would mean that they are investigating the boxes...good sign. Do they squat when you approach them? About one week after my one started to squat, I had my first egg.

My barred rocks started laying at 19 1/2 weeks...

Come to think of it, I have seen them squatting! I've also seen a few of them picking awkward times to sit down. Does that mean anything?

Not sure about that. What I noticed was that she was squatting, pacing, going back and forth from the coop to the run and eating more. Eating more may have nothing to do with it. I've never seen that as a sign. She would also periodically sit in a nest. DH went out to turn the lights out one evening and saw her in the nest. This was at nine o clock. He waited an hour to turn it off but it was a false alarm. Waiting for that first egg is agonizing.
