when does a broody go on lockdown?

Well....our little silkie "zoey" was down for her break this afternoon as usual so I ran to look and.......NOTHING happening with her eggs. Still waiting but not looking good. Poor girl--i can not talk my husband into buying her a chick after I spent so much on some fertile eggs for her already :(
were these eggs through the mail? if so, it can be very hard on them to go through the mail. those squiggly things attached to the yolk you've probably noticed when you fry and egg are suspensitory ligaments and they break remarkably easily with the jostling that goes with traveling in a delivery truck.

Yes, 5 of the eggs she has now were mail ordered. She only had 1 little egg of her own and I was worried it would not hatch (yes we have a silkie roo in with her and his last batch of eggs had 100% fertility when our Cochin brooded them...some were even zoeys eggs that hatched last time!) . I ordered crested cream legbar eggs from Mississippi & we live in alabama. It was 2 day shipping. I let them sit for a day with the pointy side down before setting them to give them time to settle out because I had researched shipped eggs and that's what was suggested. Therefore, her little egg should have hatched 2 days before today which was the supposed hatch date for the c.c.l. eggs.

You might want to candle and see if there is development. If the eggs are dark except for the air cell, give them a couple more days. If they don't show any development, you can then discard them.

If i don't see a pip in the cream legbar eggs during the day tomorrow, I will candle all of them at dark. Since today is day 21 on the last added eggs and I actually put them under her at 9pm then I still have hope that something will happen during the night on those. I really don't think the silkie egg has a chance tho because today is day 23 on it.

I agree that the silkie egg is probably not going to hatch.

  1. Ok so we have a new baby silkie!! The egg hatched today...day 26!!!!!:celebrate:wee:yesss:
  2. Annnnnnd......my son said he saw a crested cream legbar egg (those r the kind we bought her and had shipped) that was pipping and he could see a chick thru the hole!!! Maybe all isn't lost for this little girls clutch after all! She just must be taking way longer since she takes more breaks during the day and she doesn't do a terrific job keeping them all in a neat pile so one is always peeking out the side. So excited and happy for our little zoey. Guess I can stop looking for a chick to but for her

Oops, guess I should've checked my spelling. That was supposed to say "guess I can stop looking for a chick to BUY for her!"

I haven't updated this post in long time.but what ended up happening was that we had 1 little chick lived from the hatch. Out silkie loves her 6 wk old baby crested cream legbar who we have named "lucky". Is there any guessing why?! They are still living in the brooder/maternity ward until lucky is older. Our family has enjoyed this little chick tremendously. I'm not sure if it is the breed or the individual personality but this chick will choose a human over a mama chicken in a second flat. U can sit with her in the yard and she chooses to sit in ur lap rather than scratch around with her silkie mom. Super sweet little girl. And yes she seems to have the auto-sexing traits of a pullet. Loving our sweet little lucky girl :)
