Ok, I had this idea last night. The rules are, the event had to have been before you were 10 years old, no teenage "wild time" stories. And it has to start with, "When I was a kid..." I thought it would be interesting to see how everyone's childhood differed and where we all came from.

When I was a kid.... one of my favorite things to do was go to my grandmothers house for chocolate ice cream. She always had a 1/2 gallon of Borden's Chocolate ice cream and my cousin and I would sit on the front steps with our bowls. We would mash and stir the ice cream until it was soft and creamy. Chocolate ice cream still takes me back, and I can still see the designs on my grandmothers bowls.

When I was a kid I loved animals (go figure

) and always had some critter 'following' me home.

One day I found a pony in the middle of the street (we lived in town but near the country) and it followed me home into my garage. I asked my mom if I could keep it. It belonged to a farmer who's fence had broken and his ponies had gotten out. We had to give it back.

My parents didn't like animals so I didn't get to keep most of what followed me home.

I remember my brother throwing my toys off the second story deck. My doll house....baby stroller....Sit-n-Spin....Big Wheel...All toast!

When I was a kid...

my father helped us build giant snow bears in his front yard during the winter. They had to be 8ft tall. We'd 'equip' them with scarves, eyes, mouths, noses, claws and food. That only lasted a few years, but I still remember it and winter's one of my favorite times because of it.

When I was a kid I used to run the hose over top of the HUGE elephant ear plants in the yard and put my bathing suit on and "shower" LMAO

I had a stuffed dog with a radio inside of it... I wish I still had it!

I collected My Little Ponys

I had all manner of animal..... rats, mice, parakeet, conure, rabbits, newts, fish, turtles, anoles, cat, dog, etc etc.

Oh, and I used to play dress-up....

When I was a kid, my grandda would take me to the state house ( Capitol Building ) in Columbia to feed the Pigeons and Squirrels. There was and elderly man that sold peanuts and popcorn just for that reason. The Pigeons and Squirrels are long gone from there, it makes me sad that that tradition is gone.

Hmmm. When I was a kid, we were pretty poor, but we kids didn't know that. We didn't have much "stuff", but we had lots of space to play outdoors...and dozens of chickens, of course! My pet was a big BO hen named Oatmeal who loved to eat strawberry jam. My favorite toys were my little plastic dinosaurs. My earliest aspiration was to be a hawk, so I could fly.

When I was a kid I'd always be doing something mischievous. I remember one time I got a large box, and went slug hunting. Collected literally hundreds of them in a day or so. Then had the bright idea that they needed air holes. So took a pencil and put holes in the box. Well, these crafty 1 to 3 ounce slugs could get through tiny holes, so the next morning, the entire porch and front door area was covered in slugs. Everything had slug trail shine and my mom spent the day with a shovel picking them off the walls and ceiling. HAHAHAHA

Then another time I had a gallon jar and filled it to the top with slug bodies... well, they died, fermented, turned into a jello like consistency... It was in the woods, and one day I decided to dump it out in front of the house. BOY it smelled RANK! LOL

For a non slug related story though, I got the K'nex roller coaster set and after making them both, I decided to make a K'nex door for my bed room door. Well, it went pretty well duct taped to the door frame, but eventually it fell down... and that is when the stickers went up:

Still can't get them off. Turned out I superglued some on.

When I was a kid, I had to walk eight miles to school, barefoot in the snow. Uphill both ways. Used to wrap barbed wire around my feet for traction.

When I was a kid I spent a lot of time wandering around in the woods and just hanging out on my own. I once read a book that said if you put peanuts out in a certain squirrel-infested place on a regular basis the squirrels would start to expect it and would hang out there waiting for more peanuts to come. Since my mamaw had given us a huge bag of raw peanuts I set about this summer project with great zeal and was very excited to find that squirrels were apparently eating the food I left. I just knew I was going to have squirrels eating out of my hands before school started. After a while it occurred to me that I never saw any squirrels actually eating my peanuts despite all patient efforts on my part. Imagine my dismay when I discovered that my evil little sisters and their friends had followed me and figured out my squirrel whisperer plans and would run up there and eat the peanuts before I got there whenever they got the chance!!!!! I beat the heck out of them with a "hippityhop"; I'll never forget the satisfying sound they used to make when you slugged someone between the shoulder blades!!! (Boy do I miss hippityhops)
