I still like the original question. It's practical as well as philosophical. In it's spirit (I think):
How much is too far? The way I see it, they are after all just chickens but they are also living things and they have certain requirements. Sanitation is important and anything that makes keeping the coop and run clean while minimizing the work, I'm all for. I guess, you don't look at the cost of some things as whether or not the chickens are worth the investment but whether of not the time it saves you is worth the investment. I've already began planning my next coop with some labor-saving modifications that I hadn't forseen. It's going to look elaborate but it's going to be functional.
Is it too far when the coop looks like a miniature version of the house in whose backyard it sits? Naw, that's just paint and shingles. It's actually something of an artistic expression, the way some of these coops look, but it's just paint. If you have a few minutes a day and a couple of bucks you can paint any coop to look glamorous. In fact, more people should strive to better the appearance of their coops, homes, cars, selves, and anything else they have any control over just because it makes the world I look at a little nicer.
You've gone too far when it's no longer fun or functional and only you can decide when that is. It's a good question, actually. If you find yourself asking "why am I doing this?" and you don't have an answer, you may have gone over the line. It wouldn't be fair for me to determine the validity of your answer, just so long as you have one. Only you know when too far is because only you know where you're going, yeah, I like that. See, the question makes you turn your eyeballs around and look inside.
