I am in the process of building my own incubator ( with my DH"s help of course) and I'm wondering if there's a point where I should wait till the end of the winter or should I go ahead and proceed. We plan on hatching some show girls, EE's, and hopefully some buckeyes. The coop is insulated and the run is covered with clear heavy duty plastic in the winter.

What ya think?

I'm also in Ohio, and I've been long since done hatching. Let's see.....basically, you'd have to wait at least a month for the eggs to hatch, which would put you into mid September. I would say it's a gamble with the weather here in Ohio....It can turn nasty real quick, or we could have a nice, Indian Summer with mild weather. October is usually pretty chilly though.

I personally, would wait, but if you have the facilities, and feel you can keep the chicks warm enough, then it would be do-able.

Good luck with your decision! I've got a trio of young buckeyes. Of course, being from Ohio, you HAVE to have a few Buckeyes in the flock! LOL Hubby named the cockerel Brutus, after the OSU mascot.

Take care,
Sharon

Hello from another Ohioan

The first year I got my bator I hatched the entire year. This year I started in January, hatching small batches. I think I did duccles and marans. Then I had a coon attack that wiped out 4 duccles and all but one of the blue marans. So I'm at it again with Blue and Black Molted Duccles and Blue and Black Cooper Marans. What are you wanting to hatch.

Like Chicmom said, you got to have Buckeyes if you live in Ohio so I need Buckeyes, My kids would like some Americanas, and some Show Girls, and maybe some Silkies. I would love to breed a Buckeye with a Silkie, wonder what that would look like?? This is gonna be so much fun,

I will post pictures of the incubator when it gets done. I'm amazed on what little I will need to buy to put it together. It's pretty awesome that my Dh is an Engineer and will do all the wiring for me. He was happy that I told him all extra chicks will be sold on craigslist.
