When should I consider assisting a hatch?

I’ve never hatched ducklings before so I don’t know what’s normal, in about six hours it will be 36 hours since they have made their internal pip but since then I haven’t seen an external pip at all? Is this typically normal for ducklings? The duck is still alive and trying.

@New duck mommy 2021 is very knowledgeable in this . I only had ducklings hatch here once, and they were under a broody chicken hen lol
mostly it’s best not to assist from what i read

Anything past 24 hours that you see the beak in the air cell not just shadowing I make a tiny safety hole
They don’t need much and you don’t need to see inside
Less is more as it keeps them moist if the hole is tiny
I take a tac and make the hole only as big as the tac pin
Then leave it for 48 hours
They will often make their own pip but te safety hole gives them time to do so with air

Now you can relax for 48 hours
Around 30 hours I’ll candle the egg but this time not the air cell but just above it. When baby is absorbed you can see into the egg
Once I see it’s clear I’ll make a zip
Usually 30-36 hours after the pip but up to 48 hours
All depends on how fast baby absorbs
One thing you don’t want to do is rush them
They take a long time to hatch and are safest in the egg to absorb

The chick ended up dying, I checked on it a few minutes ago and it was dead. No movement, noise or trying to break out. I feel like this week keeps getting worse and worse.

When they die in the egg there is usually a reason that we can’t see
I have learned I would rather they pass in the egg then me having to cull

I lost one yesterday myself that was 6 Days old
Unfortunately it got stuck between the water catch thing and the feed and was wet
