When should i give them grit??

A lot of people on this message board say that if you free range they will find their own grit. Even my father-in-law says this is true. But I still like to give them grit anyway because they EAT it!!! And love it.

If you supply them with a quality food source that includes limestone or the like, you realistically don't likely need to supply much extra grit.

Just keep in mind "grit" help them with digestion and allows them to get the full value of their feed. Which can keep your feed bill lower. I do agree if they are free ranging they're probably getting what they need naturally, though it doesn't hurt to have a little in a dish too.

I'm not sure what the mixed grit is, maybe several different sizes of grit together. Locally, I am able to buy small bags of chick grit for young ones---it is very finely crushed stone, and I think they scent it with anise to attract the chicks to it. You need it if your birds are not where they can eat very small rocks naturally. The larger grit for adult birds is graded by number. I think I got a bag of #2 grit. If you have construction sand, that would work.
