When to expect an egg

Could be any day if she squatted then stayed there!
Make sure you have your nesting boxes set up and ready.
( I also baited mine with a fake egg- they kept pushing that out.
Then I switched to a golf ball. They love the golf balls for some reason)

I'm gonna try golf balls now!! I'm tired of gathering all the fake eggs and putting them back! lol

I'm so eagerly awaiting our first egg from our Hamburg. She keeps checking out the boxes, going in and moving things around and then nothing. My husband thinks I'm nuts cause I get home from work and the first thing I do is check the boxes, and then scoop her up to feel her pelvic bones. He says I'm molesting the chickens... LOL

A word about squatting...
My chickens squatted occasionally for weeks. I ran around the yard experimentally catching up to them and holding my hand over them in an attempt to trigger this instinct. Mostly they'd run away. But then a few started to squat. Then they started to "do it" whenever my husband came out to see them and he didn't have to run around or hold his hand over them. It made him feel very special.
"Do you think they like me?" He'd ask hopefully.
So there's squatting.

And then there's Serious Squatting.
The serious kind:
Includes elbows out like when you're eating a messy but delicious burger. A swayed back flat enough to set your coffee cup on,
and sometimes a little drumroll of their widely planted feet- like a football player, a defensive tackle waiting for the snap.

Not really a ladylike posture at all once you see it. Lol

Who knew chickens would be so much entertainment?
