When to get rid of roos?

I'm just curious...did you get chickens that were sexed or straight run? I ordered females which are one week old right now and would be so sad to have to get rid of a lot of Roos that were supposed to be females. Thanks for the answer.

Well I guess you could say both, or neither? lol . I got from from a lady at a local farm. She had lots of baby chicks and told me she would do her best getting me all females but that she didn't really sex the chickens. Apparently she is horrible at "guessing" even though she breeds chickens (one of the black sex links that she said was guaranteed female turned out to be the mean roo!). I have 4 roos, one i will keep so that leaves 3 to rehome. I will be sad about two of them but not the mean one..I will be glad when he is gone!

featherz sent her roos to me...

just don't ask for visitation rights. Where are you located?

That 1 is a black sex link, and I'm sure its a hen, she looks exactly like my BLSL at that age, the other BLSL is a hen as well, your RIR and BR cross appear to be roo's. I also have 1 really mean girl a Black sex link as well she beats up on everyone including my roo's.....so don't believe it when you think hens can't be just as aggressive as a roo, because they sure can. I think you have 4 hens from the pictures, and 3 roo's. Though the BR is hard to tell because even the hens get pretty good sized combs, and wattles, but at this age the one with the most comb is suspected roo, so I will say my thoughts on girls boys, are as follows

Nilla ...roo
Nugget ....roo
Delilah...hen
black sex link......hen
curious george......? i'll guess roo, but I'm not familiar with RIR, but from his actions I would say rooster
Turbo...hen
chicken little... hen

my 2 Black sex links at 18 weeks
my other mean BLSL girl with Black beard the EE rooster

this hen has hardly any of the red/brown feathering my other 2 have and she reminds me of a roo with attitude, but she is a hen sex links are sexable at hatch by color if she was a he she would be Barred
There's a link on sexlinks here somewhere it explains a lot of the crosses, if I find it I'll add so everyone can look up info on SL chickens and how to breed them.
here it is...... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=261208

I am also thankful that there is a poultry/livestock auction near me. If I can't find homes (either freezer camp homes or other), that's my last resort option. I'd prefer to send them somewhere 'known', even if their ultimate destination is freezer camp, but the livestock auctions are good when you have nothing else.

Curious George looks just like my Luke, which was suppose to be a Lucy:he
and I'm having the same problem you are, where to send them, Love to give him to a good home and not the dinner table.

Not sure who you got them from, but the 1st one you were told was a BSL, no...at all...the one you call Chicken Little is a BSL pullet...

I see a bunch of roos also.

I sold mine at a local sale barn, my husband works at...try Craigslist...or an ad in the paper, free to good home, not for dinner!
