When to heat the coop

I live in Vermont and usually keep my coop heated to about 50 degrees. One reason is that it makes it more pleasant to be in the coop myself on those cold days, so I can hang out with my girls more!

The problems that we talked about in the previous posts for LP heaters (vapor and carbon monoxide) are unique to the "ventless" heater variety. If the heater had a good venting system (i.e. exhaust is directly removed via a pipe or stack), you could use a propane tank and a small heater without worrying about gassing the little guys. I don't know what exists out there, but I would suspect something like a heater for an RV or camper might have a direct vent and run off propane. You might try asking around at local stores for camping or an RV lot to see if they have a unit that direct vents and requires no electricity.

Good luck

Thanks Everyone..

If no one out there is using it then I will avoid it.

I can run electric to the coop and that is what I will do.

I know the LP fireplaces put out a lot of moisture as a

by-product.

I am afraid my chickens will be as spoiled as any indoor pet

could be. I already asked the guy at Agway to keep my feet

on the ground to avoid overkill on the coop and feeding. If I thought

it would make them happy I'd put a flat panel

in the coop with He-Haw reruns playing all day.

Thanks Again..

Funny you should mention he haw reruns to spoil your girls, note the satellite dish on my almost finished hen house
