When to introduce a roost?

My chicks are one week old. I'd read that it was good to introduce a roost early. My chicks don't seem to know what to do with it.

Hi!! My 4 and 3 week old chicks will jump up on the roost and sit there for a while. My little bantam cochin frizzle jumped up yesterday, fell asleep and started to fall backwards! LOL She tried so hard to stay up, fluttering her little wings but ended up falling on her back after all! LOL! They still sleep in a group but I moved the heat closer to the roost for the older ones. It is funny to watch them figure out things!

I introduced a roost at about 2 weeks. After a few days I would catch 1 or 2 hanging out, but now at a month old they are all over it! Fun to watch too! The little roo's will run and jump off it, flapping their wings like crazy. I'm new to chicks, but that's my experience. Nice design by the way! Mine is an old piece of broom between 2 small pieces of plywood.

I put one in at about 2 weeks. Funny to watch them draped over it sound asleep. They soon figured out how to keep their heads up though. ...stan

It's not necessary this young, but usually it does give them something to play on. They may be quite a bit older before they start sleeping on a roost nightly. Hopefully this helps them learn.

That pic cracked me up. I never thought about giving them a little roost. I might have to try it on my next batch lol.

If you have room in your brooder, might as well stick one in. I had mine in when they were about 1 week. It was fun watching them "discover" it. First we had a stick, now it is a smaller version of what they will have in their coop.
