when to let free-range

my chickens are 9 weeks on tuesday. at what age is it appropriate to let them start wandering around the yard? what is the age in which they can be "free range" chickens during the days?

I would definately let them out. It is so much fun to watch them at that age. I wouldn't let them out without your supervision though, thats just me- I'm cautious. You never know when a neighborhood dog might be loose or a chicken hawk flying over. And besides, It's a good excuse to get some time with them.

BEFORE you let them free range make sure they have had access to chick grit for a few days. Actually right now you can probably mix chick grit with chicken grit and have it available at all times.

I started letting my chicks outside when they were 6 weeks old. I put up a makeshift fence so they wouldn't get scattered in the big run I had prepared for them. Let them out the first time for maybe an hour each day the first week and then increase the time after that. Weather permitting. They need gradual exposure to the dirt so they can build up their immunity to anything that might be in the dirt.

The grit will help them break down the grass fibers and any bugs they catch. Always provide shade and water. In the beginning provide food also.

Everyday I moved the fence to a new grassy area so they wouldn't peck at each other droppings.

i'd say let them out under your supervision when there laying you can start letting them out whithout your supervision.
