I have 7 chicks that are 6 weeks old. My coop is ready. Just wondering if I can move them over at this time. I plan to have a cozy coop heater in the coop, but I don’t want them to get too cold. It only gets to a low of 32 occasionally during the night and warms up to 65 during the day. (Central Texas)

If they are fully feathered, move them out now. There is no need for heat in the coop; not only is a fire hazard but it’s completely unnecessary. I wait until they’re in the brooder with no heat for a couple of days; then you can acclimate them to the cold slowly by having some outdoor playtime daily. Don’t forget that when fully feathered they are wearing a permanent down jacket. Adding heat in the cold months will have an adverse effect since they are naturally able to handle cold. It could possibly inhibit the growth of essential warming feathers.
