If you see the chicks getting on their belly and crawling under it you can be assured it needs to be raised----LOL----just picking. No I would keep it a little above their heads as they grow.

I use a similar design. I tend to increase the height after the first 4-5 days (after day 3 I only turn the heating pad on at dusk until morning) and then monitor the chicks. I increase the height every couple of days (by 1cm or so) until around day 10 when they no longer need heat. I'm not suggesting you follow this guide, as we live in different climates, but if you are brooding your chicks indoors, then ambient temperatures are likely to be similar.

If the chicks are cold, they will chirp and this is the best way to know if you have increased the height too much.
