when to replace my ladies

It makes sense to replace them after 2 years. They lay less and seem to molt longer after that. I have been putting off culling my old ladies, but it really needs to happen this year. Mine are in their 4th year and I get eggs regularly from them, but the egg quality has deteriorated (thin shells, runny albumin, weak yolks, shell defects) to the point where I can't justify keeping them any longer.

Good luck.

I have a pretty big yard so I just plan to keep em until they are old and ready to go naturally,. I even bought some from a lady that i knew were past their prime. i still usually get a couple of eggs a week from them - and when they do - its a huge egg so its worth keeping them - plus they add some body heat to the coop in winter for the rest of them. They also seem to get even more loveable and mellow as they get older - so they become better pets
