Hi everyone,

I am going to be buying a new flock soon and had a few questions. When do you generally slaughter the males? 12 weeks? I wanted to just get a straight run and then slaughter the males before they get too noisy for my neighbors... When is a good time? And do you think it will have a really negative effect on my flock to kill off all of the roosters before they are mature?

Thanks
Ryan

Too many mature roos is what will have a negative effect on your flock. A common slogan on here: when they crow, they go. 12-16 weeks will give you a delicious little fryer -- a little small, maybe, but still young enough to be tender and good for grilling and frying, any fast cooking method.

A couple of times I've had to cull a roo who'd become a royal pain in the opinion of my hens. They tend to thank me with an increase in egg production.
