i have barred rocks, rir, black australorps, campine, columbian wyandotte and an EE. all were hatched around april 20th.

when should i start checking for eggs?

Two of mine were born mid-March, one other first of April, no eggs yet, still a lady in waiting.

I asked that ? when I was waiting for my ladies to start hatching. The answer was look at there combs, when they turned darker. Second was if you have a rooster and he start roosting with the ladies, that is also a sign. I couldn't figure out the color deal but the rooster help me out. When he started roosting it wasn't long after that I received my 1st egg.

In general they'll start laying at somewhere around 5-6 months. Their combs do get much redder . . . if you have their nest box ready make sure you have a fake egg or two in it, or golf balls, so they get the idea that that's where the eggs go.

I have two roosters and they've always "roosted" together with the hens since they were chicks - so, not sure what you mean, can you explain that? Also, the combs on all of my hens, 2 Australorps, 1 NHR and two Black Stars are so small I'm not sure I could tell a color change

Our gals 4 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Barred Rocks were born 4/13. Same here, no eggs yet. I've heard approx 20 wks? Guess we have a ways to go yet.

Ours are nesting in tall grass in "their" yard, my concern (sorta) is that this will be the place they decide to lay. Hope Not. I was wondering about putting fake eggs in their boxes? Perhaps even golf balls. Personally I don't care where they lay their eggs, as long as they lay. However in their boxes would be awesome. Best of Luck
