My birds are around 10 weeks old. They been on straight starter feed. I've read that as long as they are on just starter feed, that they wouldn't need grit until later. I would still give them grit occasionally just to be sure they were getting some. My question is, when should i start giving them grit on a more consistent basis? They do have access to the outdoors to roam their fenced in area.

They're likely getting their grit from the dirt and small stones within now. Since they are outside and foraging you can offer some either in a dish or thrown on the ground.

If/when the diet begins to include anything other than water soluble feed (starter, grower and layer feeds are water soluble) that will require the grinding action of the gizzard to digest they need to have grit available to them either in their environment or your offering.
