So one of my golden sex links laid their first egg at 16 weeks - very exciting! When should I be switching to layer feed?

I'd do it now so that she will get adequate calcium to make her eggshells. The instructions on the feedbag say to begin giving layer feed to chickens when they are 4 1/2 months old or a month before their estimated laying start. I wouldn't give it to pullets less than four months because it can damage their kidneys when they're young.

I have six other birds who haven't laid yet and I don't know which one laid the egg - should they all get layer?

Should I put the half bag of grower I have left in the compost heap?

I would just start mixing the starter with the layer feed right now. That way it won't be such a switch on the feed and you will be able to use the rest of your starter!
