I have 6 healthy looking G Comets with nice red combs and waddles. They are 17 weeks old and I haven’t seen any evidence of egg laying yet. I know they are close. So should I open up the nest box area and put in the ceramic eggs?

Golf balls work well too, and may be cheaper. Easier to tell golf balls from real eggs, also.Red comets do start laying earlier than other chickens most of the time, which would put them laying around 18 weeks. But it could still take up to 21 weeks, that is the standard. Just be patient, the eggs are coming! If they are squatting when you pet them that’s a good sign. You can get fake eggs from TSC and put them in the nesting boxes for encouragement.
I had to write on our fake eggs cause I once accidentally collected them and then my dad tried to make one for breakfast onceGolf balls work well too, and may be cheaper. Easier to tell golf balls from real eggs, also.
That's hilarious. I used fake eggs once and drew spirals on them with Magic Marker. I think a snake got them, they disappeared.I had to write on our fake eggs cause I once accidentally collected them and then my dad tried to make one for breakfast onceI actually had to candle the eggs to be able to figure out which were the fakes and remove them from the carton lol

we drew on them with Sharpie I think.
OMGI also had some fake eggs that kept on getting collected by guest egg collectors (every visitors favorite chore lol). I drew on mine with a sharpie too after my wife tried to crack one on the cast iron. I walked in the kitchen to her slamming an egg on the edge of the pan and was very confused until I saw a piece of ceramic chip off. Got a good laugh out of that one.
@Big Doggie I know that wait is tough. Be patient
