My buff orphington is 23 weeks old. When should she start laying. She has a comb, but not much of a waddle. Her face is dark pink. Her pelvic bones are two fingers apart.

I thought chickens were supposed to start laying around 25 weeks. I, too, have a Buff Orphington--Daisy--who was born on May 1st, so that makes her about 24 weeks old. So, it should be soon, right? Or--is the fact that we live in Vermont and we are already losing light going to be a problem?

Yes, chickens generally start laying at 20-25 weeks or so, though they can start laying as early as 16 weeks. So, it should, in theory, not be long before she starts laying. The decreasing daylight hours may prevent her from laying until spring.

But, if we put a light on in the barn, where they sleep at night, on a timer--will that help? We have 2 other chicks that came with her--born the same day--a Rhode Island Red (Rose) and a Plymouth Barred Rock (Daisy) and neither of them are laying yet either. All 3 chicks were born on May 1st.

A light should help them start laying sooner.

Ok. Well, we just moved them into their brand new digs inside the new barn--they can still get out to free range during the day, but they come in the barn at night--and we put a light on until 10:00 PM. The three duck hens--who were born the same time as these chickens--all laid an egg today! For two, it was their first egg; for the third--she had been laying about two weeks.

Your hen may not be laying for these reasons:
-Age
-Molting
-Health
-Improper nutrition
-Weather
-Undiscovered pest
-Undiscovered nest

Good luck!
