I have 2 geese, in separate pens. They have both been sat on their eggs for around 28 days and haven’t kicked any of them out. If they don’t hatch, will she just leave the eggs? Both are looking quite thin now and I worry they may become poorly.
Thanks

If the eggs are viable, they will sit on the eggs until they hatch. If the eggs are not viable, they will sit on the nests until they are chased off. Sorry, they do not have an automatic off button and will not willingly abandon the nest as long as there are eggs in them.

Geese can take longer to hatch than 28 days. If you are really concerned, candle some of the eggs and make your decision based on the condition of the eggs. If the eggs are viable, they should be nearing the internal pip stage. If they are not viable, they may anywhere from clear to rotten.

Good luck.

Thanks very much for your reply, I’m just worried about how to check the eggs as she rarely leaves them when I’m there? Is it fair to disrupt her to move off the eggs to check them?

Put on a jacket and gloves and gently slide your hand under the goose to gather an egg or two at a time.

A dedicated broody should stay on the nest but may hiss and bite very hard.

When returning the eggs, gently lay them beside her and let her take them.
