Hello, I am new to raising chickens. I purchased 2 pellets, Aussies, and picked them up in middle May. They looked younger than 5 weeks old. Now one is much larger than the other, and my neighbor told me the larger one is a BJG not an Aussy. I have no idea what I am doing, but they seem happy and well adjusted. The GJ has large comb and waddle and is really red. Yesterday I went in to put them in their enclosure and she just dropped down and started yelling at me. Is that squatting?

My Australorp kind of squats when I come up behind her. I think that is like a submissive pose for a hen.
It is the Jersey that just started doing that. The Aussy is a bit chicken, lol, the Jersey is the one that is being loud, dropping or squatting, and she just started pecking at me.

Mine don't scream while squatting but maybe yours is an oddball. If her comb is very red and she's squatting then yes it's likely that she's getting close. I find that my girls start laying about 7 to 14 days after onset of squatting.

I just had my Americana?(think that's right on the spelling) lay her first on Wednesday. She is 4 months old. I was so excited I posted it on my FB page, lol and texted my neighbor. I know, I'm the crazy chicken lady.
I'm new at this and she has been such a great help. My girls are actually hers on loan to me. Such a sweet friend.

Jersey Giants dont lay for a while, some wait until 8 months. Mine make zero noise when squatting. I had a Delaware that's comb was red for 4 months before she laid an egg, sometimes comb color can be deceiving.

We are going to wrap the enclosure soon, as winter is peeking her head in the last few nights. I hope they start laying soon. My JG just started squatting, but my Aussy is not showing any signs of laying. So new to this.

They lay when they're ready to lay. My first group of girls felt like they took so long to get up to speed that my mom (while visiting on vacation) said she thought they were defective and offered to butcher them for dinner lol.

:gigI have four that are 6 months and no signs of eggs coming anytime soon. I'm getting 4 eggs a day already so I don't mind
