I have 7 1/2 week old chicks and am wondering how long it usually takes for chickens to start laying, I'm not expecting any eggs anytime soon but am just wondering.

you'll notice their faces turn red, & their cackle changes. Soon after you'll get eggs. Like Kooshie said, In about 5 months.

Mine started laying at 21 weeks (but...who's counting?!).
Remember to take a picture of your first egg!!

Is it true that the first eggs are generally smaller than the other eggs? Just starting out and getting things warmed up so to speak...

i have 4 rir that started laying at 9 months old. they were my first, so is that why they took so long to lay or is thatb so. I JUST received another batch of chickens, they are 6 weeks old, some rir, and l barred rock., will they take along time to lay or will they lay about 5 months or so. And why do you think my first set took so long to lay, i was wondering if it was because they were born in april, and the first flock

One of my chickens, a barred rock bantam began laying at 18 weeks and has laid an egg nearly every day since! My full size chickens started laying around 23 weeks. my other two bantams were 20 and 21 weeks. Once one of mine started it was a chain reaction for all of them and within three weeks they were all laying! All of them their eggs have gotten bigger with time.
