I used to have to buy my own birthday presents through out my childhood. My mom, & Sister got me a birthday present this year, my dad, & grandpa gave me $20.

Yes, they'd give me money to spend on my own birthday presents. Usually I'd have a couple bucks left afterwards I would put away to save.

It was especially difficult to save money when your parents take it, & spend it on cigarettes, & alcohol.
