these are great suggestions - it's getting close to easter so I think that will be the solution, and dirt's a good idea to give a little heft.

thanks everybody!

I got mine online from McMurray http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/product/wooden_nest_eggs.html I had a big laugh because I too thought they were $15 apice - I sucked it up and ordered ONE ... received a pack of 12. I'm painting what my hens don't need for easter gifts! btw. I have a Jersey Giant who also nags when she can't go out - drives my Husband batty.

Does it matter what color golf balls or eggs? We found 2 white golf balls and filled a plastic toy egg with sand for the first three nests, but are short 1 egg for the last nest. I found a royal blue golf ball, but don't know if the color would confuse the chickens.

If the chickens don't care about color, it would save me a trip to the store to use the royal blue golf ball.

They won't care. We use colored plastic easter eggs....blue, orange, purple, yellow, green, etc. The gals seem quite happy to lay right beside them.

I use golf balls, My father always just marked up an egg that the chickens laid so you could tell the difference and used that
