And, to stay on subject, Etymology on line is good, The OED (on CD) is better, but for digging into American English etymology (up through the 1930's) H.L. Menken's, The American Language is the best.

Without Menken I'd have never found out that, owing to a popular entertainer's skit concerning the use of outhouses, that these conveyances of ______ (rhymes with the last name of the inventor of the `pull chain toilet) were referred to, for many years, as Chick sales

Go figure.​
