I am wondering if two of my larger hens might be roosters. I was also wondering if the vent is basically the same as the "poop shoot" and if not, could I tell if my hens are roosters if they are "ventless?" I would appreciate any insight.

Im no expert, but I think they all look the same from the outside. Unless they are vent sexed as a peeper, you have to wait and see. If you post a picture some of the smart peeps here might be able to tell ya!

btw....there are no dumb questions

Weve all been where you hehe.

The easiest way to explain it is there are two "chutes": one for eggs and one for poop. There is one hole (the vent) but there is a valve that will block one "chute" while the other is doing it's thing. So, yes, they come out the same hole, but not from the same place. Confused? Yeah, I don't blame you!

You are ALL so awesome. I just laughed my "poop shoot/chute" off!!! I am embarrassed to say that 1) I don't have any pictures of my sweeties yet and 2) I wouldn't even know how to post a picture if I did. I do understand alot better now about the chute thing though. I never knew about their special "valve" how cool is that. I probably shouldn't even have chickens knowing so little about them. I hope they survive in spite of me. Oh not really, they are just more complex than I knew. But I do know that I love them and want them to do well. I guess I'll just have to get some pictures and learn to post them or wait until I hear that "cock a doodle doo" one fine morning.
